Frederick C. Whittlesey

Frederick Churchill Whittlesey

Born: February 04, 1827 at Curtisville, Massachusetts

Married: October 16, 1849 to Lydia Glazier Larson at Rochester, Monroe County, New York

Died: March 29, 1899 at Rochester, Monroe County, New York

From "The Sloopers, Their Ancestry & Their Posterity," by J. Hart Rosdail, 1961, pp 393-4.

"Frederick C. Whittlesey has a nice growing business back in Rochester, but when gold rush fever reached New York State, he sold it and went west. He found gold, but not in quantity enough to pay, and came back a poor man like many another. He returned by way of Panama and told of being paddled along the waterways by natives wearing only loin cloths.

Back in Rochester, apparently he and Lydia lived in the old Whittlesey home located on the very large lot at Frost and Jefferson Streets near Genesee Park. Fred was a painter and a penman, who wrote such a beautiful hand that the result was marketable as a service to others. In later years he worked in the New York Central ticket office in Syracuse, staying with his daughter during the week.

Although not a Quaker like Lydia, Fred was very religious. He was tall and wore a goatee. Lydia was short and sweet. After her husband's death she lived with her daughter Fredericka in Syracuse. She died there but was buried at Mt. Hope, Rochester.
